Who we are
Rooted in Richmond: Our Story
At PRS, we don’t just see a construction site; we see a living system. Based right here in the heart of the River City, we’ve spent years watching the James River flow and the Richmond skyline evolve. We realized that while our city is historic, the way we build doesn't have to be stuck in the past.
We believe that a home should function like a mature oak in a Virginia forest—providing shelter, managing resources efficiently, and contributing more to its environment than it takes away.
Our Foundation: PRS Principles
Most construction companies follow a "demo and build" mindset. We follow a sustainable mindset grounded in Permaculture. Permaculture isn't just for gardening; it’s a design philosophy that centers on ethics and ecological systems. Here is how we apply those principles to every Richmond, Virginia project:
Observe and Interact: Before we pick up a hammer, we look at the land. We study the Virginia sun angles for solar gain, the drainage patterns of our local clay soil, and the way the breeze moves through the Fan or North Side. We design for this place, not a template.
Catch and Store Energy: From high-performance insulation to passive solar design, we ensure your home harvests energy rather than bleeding it out. In a town where summers are humid and winters are biting, efficiency isn't a luxury—it’s a necessity.
Produce No Waste: Richmond is full of history. Whenever possible, we prioritize deconstruction over demolition, salvaging existing structure to keep the "bones" of our city out of the landfill. In our world, waste is just an unused resource.
Integrate Rather Than Segregate: Your home shouldn't be a box that keeps nature out. We design spaces that integrate nature, utilizing rain gardens, living walls, and native landscaping to make your property a functional part of the RVA watershed.
Why We Build This Way
Richmonders are a unique breed. We love our history, we cherish our river, and we care about our neighbors. Care for the Earth, Care for the People, and Fair Share are the three core ethics of permaculture, and they are the three core ethics of PRS.
We aren't interested in "greenwashing." We’re interested in building healthy, breathable, and resilient homes that will still be standing—and still be efficient—a hundred years from now.
"Construction is often designed to work against nature. At PRS, we've decided to partner with it."
